Social Media in Recruitment Useful or a Giant Waste of Time
Social Media in Recruitment Useful or a Giant Waste of Time Its definitely a norm; using Twitter and LinkedIn to advertise and promote jobs, as well as using these platforms to connect and communicate with potential candidates. Using social media is seen as an essential component to any kind of recruiting strategy. But how useful is it? We spend a lot of time on social media, but are we seeing the returns on investment we put into our social strategies? We have to ask our panel of industry experts how influential social hiring has been for them. Hint: it is VERY useful! Bryan Chaney Social media is everything from forums and blogs, to tweets and email. So yes, we should be, and we are all using social media to recruit people that our hiring managers want to hire. The difference in using social media, compared to traditional CVs is that more contextual information is available online through someoneâs personal brand and what theyâre sharing. We understand more about a candidateâs personalities and passions because of this visibility. BUT this is a two-way conversation, which not all recruiters understand. Candidates are looking for personal stories from recruiters, employees, and brands as well. Most are only getting job specs, and they are hungry for the rest of the story. Bryan Chaney, Director of Employer Brand, Indeed Cheryl Cran To be able to recruit top talent today you NEED to be social media savvy LinkedIn is rated as the top social media source for finding potential talent. I have clients who have found stellar people through Twitter and Instagram as well. Social media IS where the millennial generation hangs out and statistics show that ALL generations look to social media for job opportunities. Recruiters need to use GIFâs, Videos, Quizzes, Games, Contests and other clever interaction style calls to action to engage people into the talent pool. Creating ongoing relationships with potential hires will ensure a continued talent pipeline for the immediate and far off future. Cheryl Cran, CEO Future of Work Expert, Synthesis at Work Inc Nathan Perrott There is no question that employers and recruiters should be using social media to attract top talent. The key question should be âHow should we be using social media?â. And that can only be answered once you understand your target audience. We must remember that social media is a broad channel type and it can vary considerably. From the core âsocialâ channels we think of (like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram), to professional networking sites and employer review sites. We musnât ignore the rise and power of private messaging apps (e.g. WhatsApp, Messenger Snapchat). Nathan Perrott, Director of Digital Marketing Strategy, AIA Worldwide Hung Lee A question like that might have made more sense 10 years ago! These days itâs difficult to create media content which isnât inherently socially enabled. Likewise, there is very little that is social that cannot instantly become a form of media. We create and consume a huge amount of social media and employers need to communicate on places where your talent is going to be. Itâs difficult to imagine for any company that cares about hiring to not at least explore using social technologies as part of their approach. Hung Lee, CEO, WorkShape.io Adam Glassman Why arenât you using social media is the question? With an unmatched ability to reach and engage a very specific audience, social is the perfect medium to reach new candidates and spread your employer brand and careers-focused content. Adam Glassman, Recruitment Strategies Manager, Alorica Chris Russell Yes! The best people are usually on social media. If I had to choose among two candidates one with a Twitter following of thousands, and one with no Twitter presence. Id give preference to the one with a social media following. Chris Russell, Managing Director, RecTech Media Jonathan Kestenbaum YES! Social media websites, especially those focused on niche groups, have extremely engaged candidates and are great sources of top talent. Jonathan Kestenbaum, Executive Director, Talent Tech Labs

10 Tips to Better Cope With Work Anxiety - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
10 Tips to Better Cope With Work Anxiety - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Does social interaction, especially at work, unnerve you to the point of paralysis? Has it gotten to the point where your work performance is affected? Are you tired of colleagues telling you to get over it, because if it were that simple, you wouldve done it a long time ago? Youre not alone. In the U.S., around 18 percent of adults suffer from anxiety disorders. Left untreated, these disorders can cripple not only your career, but also your ability to live a productive life. Fortunately, anxiety is highly treatable. Although your best bet is to see a therapist, here are 10 things you can do on your own to manage your condition: Add Self-Care to Your Morning Routine Take steps to ease yourself into the day as soon as you wake up. Set aside a few minutes to meditate on your bed or any other comfortable place. Read a book that isnt a heart-pumping thriller or horror story. Immerse yourself in a warm bubble bath. Do anything that calms you down without adversely affecting your health the way drinking, smoking and overeating do. Take Control of Your Work Are you always overwhelmed by your daily workload? Unless you take steps to bring that under control, itll end up aggravating your anxiety and making your job harder than it already is. Plan your work beforehand. Determine how much you can reasonably handle in a day. Write your to-do list accordingly and stick to it. If someone asks you to do something that isnt on your list, turn them down in a professional way. Setting boundaries may feel uncomfortable at first, but itll benefit your health and sanity in the long run. Take Regular Breaks You dont have to work eight hours nonstop. If your concentration feels like its fading away or you need to use the bathroom, dont be afraid to get away from your desk. Your brain will need it to recover and mull over whatever problem youre trying to solve. Ask for Help Yes, its uncomfortable. Yes, its entirely possible that your co-worker will grumble under their breath for the trouble. If youve got more on your plate than you can handle alone, though, its usually a good idea to ask for assistance. Even a simple Hello, could you lend me a hand over here? will suffice, as long as you promise to return the favor later. The benefits of mastering this skill even go beyond the workplace â" for instance, when you ask for help to manage anxiety. Choose Your Crowd Carefully Its important to have a solid support system in the workplace. Not only can these people help you with work-related troubles, but they can also lend you an ear if theres something you need to get off your chest. Just make sure theyre trustworthy and that they respect you for who you are. Watch Your Physical Health Try to allot time for exercise every day, even if you dont feel like it. Whether its jogging in the park or moving into a lotus position, exercise has been proven to ease anxiety levels. Studies have shown yoga to be particularly effective as an alternative approach to treatment. You can also eat fermented food â" like pickles, yogurt and kimchi â" for a similar effect. Consider a Vacation Sometimes, work drains you so much, you just want to exert the minimum amount of effort for it. In that case, take time off. You might feel guilty about what you leave behind, but think of it this way: Youll be a more productive worker if youre energized and alert from your vacation. Consider a Different Job Then again, its possible your job just isnt a fit for you to begin with. You can power through your current job if you dont have any other choice, but you might also be able to take one of several jobs for people with social anxiety disorder or ask your employer if they have any telecommuting positions youre qualified for. Its never too late to change things up career-wise. Celebrate Your Successes No matter how small your achievements may be, give yourself credit for them. You worked hard for them, so you deserve a pat on the back. However, dont forget to thank everyone who helped you along the way, too. Theyll appreciate the gesture. Stay True to Yourself As cliché as it sounds, its one of the best things you can do for yourself. If you prefer books over Happy Hours, thats okay. If your co-workers tease you about your condition, let them. Do what feels right for you and surround yourself with people who support you no matter what. You might be different, but that doesnt mean youre any less deserving of respect and love than most. Again, these tips are not cures. Theyre simply ways to make your condition easier to live with on a daily basis. If your anxiety is severely interfering with how you function, please seek professional help ASAP. Your mind and body will thank you for it.

Dreaming of working from home 5 traits youll need
Dreaming of working from home 5 traits youâll need The American workforce is changing, and one of the most visible changes is the fact that many American workers converge less and less often in a traditional office. Recent research from Gallup shows that telecommuting is on the rise and that nearly four times as many Americans report that they work remotely than did 20 years ago. If youâre looking for ways to make working remotely work for you, youâll need to recognize how it differs from working in a traditional office setting â" itâs much more than avoiding the commute and the cubicle. To help you figure out if youâre going to thrive in a remote work setting, I spoke with Tricia Sciortino, a business leader who manages an entirely remote workforce. Sciortino is the president of eaHELP, a provider of virtual assistant services. eaHELPâs entire corporate team works from their homes, as do the hundreds of contractors who partner with eaHELP. Tricia shared the top five qualities she and her team look for when it comes to hiring remote workers who really get things done: 1. Technology savvy Remote workers absolutely have to stay connected, and technology tools are their lifelines. âWe conduct nearly every meeting via video, as well as every step of our interviewing process that we donât do in-person,â Sciortino said. âIt gives us a deeper level of connection and insight than weâd get over the phone, and I donât ever feel like Iâm working âaloneâ because Iâm seeing my teamsâ faces on a daily basis, except itâs on a screen rather than in an office.â Sciortino also highlighted how the ability to find and implement new technology solutions is key for workers who will have to serve as their own ad-hoc IT support departments. âThereâs nobody for us to call when our laptops act up, so our teams have to be willing to figure some things out for themselves,â she said. 2. Communication You canât let out of sight equal out of mind when working remotely. Communication and clarity take on a new level of importance when working remotely. âWe look for people who have the ability to ask good, clarifying questions and get the answers we need,â Sciortino said. âWeâre also very intentional about communicating a message in multiple ways â" Iâd much rather over-communicate with my teams than leave them wondering.â 3. Motivation Remote workers donât have anybody watching the clock to see when they start and stop working. That means intrinsic motivation â" performing an action or behavior because you enjoy the activity itself â" is essential for working from home. âNo one is there to cheer you on or push you, so youâve got to know how to stay on task and know the practices that help you get the most done in the time you have,â Sciortino said. 4. Boundary setting Working from home can be a bit like a Dickens novel: The best of times and the worst of times. âWorking remotely means I have more freedom to work when and how I want, which is terrific for me as a mother of two school-age daughters,â Sciortino said, âbut it also means that I can never physically leave it âat the office.â That can be challenging for many people working remotely for the first time.â Sciortino and her team counsel new remote workers to set up a physical office thatâs separate from the rest of their home if possible, so they can literally leave the office. They also frequently share tips for time management and setting boundaries between work and home life. 5. Trust When you donât see your co-workers daily, and they donât see you, it can get a bit tricky when conflicts arise and expectations go unmet. âWhen we find ourselves running into gaps in communication and perspectives, weâve learned that we have to fill that gap with trust â" we have to assume the best of each other. Otherwise, our virtual working culture goes straight down the drain,â Sciortino said. âAnd we each know that the burden to be trustworthy is on us â" we trust everyone is doing what they need to be doing, and that we each need to live up to that trust.â Working remotely can be an incredible benefit for employers, as they can recognize huge savings in overhead and often huge gains in productivity. It can be an incredible benefit for employees who go into a remote working situation with their eyes open. âWe love being an all-virtual company, but we know it takes hard work to make it work,â Sciortino said. And by recognizing that the work will be worth it, you can make it work for your career as well.
